Research methods consist of data collection techniques and analysis as its primary technique used in a research process. Aside from these key research methods, there are a few elements that need to be addressed during the research process. These elements are usually employed during graduate business dissertation and the masters and PhD levels.

Research methods are a broad term. While methods of data collection and data analysis represent the core of research methods, you have to address a range of additional elements within the scope of your research. These
elements include:

Research philosopy

Types of research

Research approach

Research design

Methods of data collection

Ethical considerations

Research philosophy

Research philosophy deals with an individual’s perception of the right method of data collection and analysis. It helps to clarify the belief about an existing knowledge and how it came to be.

A research philosophy implies that all research studies are a result of certain assumptions, and you are in the best position to choose the best one that will provide the best result to your research problem. When you have a good knowledge of research philosophy, you will be able to choose the right research method.

Types of Research

Another element that research methods depend on is the type of research. The type of research is used according to the purpose of the study.

Based on the purpose of research methodology, research studies can be fundamental or applied research.

Fundamental research is also known as pure or basic research. It deals with the improvement of the scope of a research study, but the results cannot be used to address specific problems.

Applied research deals with action as it helps to solve an immediate problem. The outcome or results from applied research are usually precise, and they can be used to solve serious problems.

Research approach

Another vital element of research methodology that impacts the type of research methods is the research approach. It is divided into deductive and inductive categories.

You can use the deductive approach when you want to determine your research objectives by testing hypothesis while the inductive approached is used when you want to determine the outcome of certain research questions at the earlier stage of the research process.

Using either research approaches depends on various factors such as the nature of the problem, research philosophy, area of study and so on.

Research design

Your aim of research usually determines the research design. For instance, if you’re not interested in producing conclusive evidence to a specific research problem, you will be using the exploratory research design.
On the other hand, if you want to provide a conclusive answer to each research problem, you can use the conclusive research design.

Methods of Data collection

Data collection includes primary and secondary data. A primary data is a data that you collect through the qualitative or quantitative means, and this form of data has not existed on the internet, magazines, books or published before.

In contrast, Secondary data are previously existing data that have been published on the internet, journals, newspapers or other sources.

You can produce a research study without primary data, but you cannot produce a research result without secondary data as these sources can be used to back up the study.

The primary method of data collection includes the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
The quantitative method involves the use of variables and universally accepted means of calculating data such as mean, mode and median. In contrast, qualitative methods involve face-to-face interactions or interviews to come up with a result.

Qualitative research mostly relies on individual data to interpret data, and it comes in the form of words, transcripts, or images. In contrast, quantitative data uses numerical forms and measurements, graphs, tables and so on.

Qualitative methods include participant and non-participant observation, case studies, focus group discussions and interviews. Quantitative methods, on the other hand, include regression analysis, mean, mode and median, correlation analysis and so on.

Sampling deals with choosing a particular set of people or population to partake in a specific research study and using the data gathered from these people as primary data for the research study.

Therefore, the population used in a particular research study determines the accuracy and reliability of such a study, and it affects the overall quality of the research.

For instance, if you use a population of youths for research meant for seniors, the accuracy of the data generated will be affected. This is because of the use of the wrong population for the research.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations are a vital part of any research method. It is the only way we can prove that research has not been affected by our beliefs and thought process and that there are no contradictions due to misconducts during the study.
